Get active on the school run this
term
27.08.15
DONEGAL parents and
children are being urged to rethink their commute to
school this year to improve health and the
environment.
Following a summer of cycling, scooting and enjoying
the great outdoors in Donegal, An Taisce's
Green-Schools Travel Programme suggest choosing
"active and sustainable" modes of transport for the
school run.
Each year the programme works with schools in
Donegal to encourage walking, cycling and scooting
to school along with options such as Park ‘n’
Stride, carpooling and using public transport.
“The start of the school year is the best time to
make small changes to the school run that will
impact greatly on their local environment and their
children’s health and wellbeing.
We hope that by working with students, parents and
teachers we will see reduced congestion at the
school gates and an increase in walking and cycling
to school.
The journey to school is a great time to get some
exercise, meet new friends and learn about your
local environment, and what better way than on foot
or by bike," said national manager of the
Green-Schools Travel programme Jane Hackett. |

This year 17 new
schools in County Donegal will join St. Columba's
College; Robertson N.S; Scoil Mhuire gan Smal;
Clonmany National School; Ballymore National School;
Scoil Mhuire, Belcruit; Scoil Colmcille,
Kilmacrennan; Scoil Eoin Pól, Lochanuir and Scoil
Padraig in Rasheeny in working on the Travel theme
of the Green-Schools programme.
Beginning with a review of how students currently
travel to and from their school, Jimmy McVeigh and
Áine O’Loughlen will work closely with the school to
identify ways in which they can make smarter travel
choices on the school run. |
