EXHAUSTED Bank Holiday
drivers are being urged to pick up a free coffee
today (Monday) at Applegreen service stations to
help cut the carnage on the nation's roads.
The 'Driver Reviver' campaign run by the Road Safety
Authority (RSA) in association with the service
station chain follows the worst week for fatal road
accidents on Irish roads in ten years.
Thirteen road users were killed in the space of six
days last week including five young people in two
Donegal accidents.
A total of 106 people have lost their lives in road
crashes so far this year - an 18 per cent increase
on 2015, latest RSA figures show.
“These deaths should serve as a reminder to us all
that using the road is the most dangerous thing we
do each day. All it takes is a split second for
tragedy to strike," said RSA chief executive Moyagh
Murdock in a statement.
Hundreds f thousands of Irish motorists and
passengers are on the move today as they travel home
from various bank holiday activities.
Meanwhile, is the fourth year of the free coffee
scheme for fatigued drivers on bank holidays -
statistically among the worst periods for serious
crashes.
Applegreen has provided thousands of free cups of
coffee in that time.
