PRESIDENT of Ireland
Michael D Higgins will travel to Derry today for the
funeral of retired Bishop of Derry, Dr Edward Daly.
Parts of the city will come to a standstill for this
afternoon's service with the public told to expect
traffic restrictions in the city centre and around
St Eugene's Cathedral area.
Large numbers are expected to attend the 3.30pm
service at the cathedral including political and
church leaders who are making their way to the city
to pay their final respects to one of the region's
most iconic figures.
Dr Daly will be laid to rest following the requiem
ceremony in the cathedral grounds.
Mass goers and regular cathedral users should note
that the William Street Car Park will be closed to
the public until 6pm this evening.
Drivers can use public car parks located at Strand
Road, Queen’s Quay, Victoria Market, Foyle Street
and Bishop Street as well as parking at the Foyle
Arts Centre, Quayside Shopping Centre, and Foyleside
Shopping Centre.
Some traffic restrictions will remain in place
before and during the service to reduce congestion
and people are asked to follow the directions from
stewards and the PSNI.
Motorists are also asked not to block entranceways
and restrict access to residential areas to ensure
easy access for emergency services if required.
A Derry City and Strabane District Council
spokesperson said: “Signage will be in place to
direct those attending the funeral and we would
encourage people to use public car parks and be
mindful that places will be limited close to the
cathedral." |
