DONEGAL County Council
has today announced that funding applications are
being invited from groups and organisations to
support local community based festivals and events
in 2016.
This initiative, which was launched in 2014,
provides a national fund of €1m to support local
community-based events and festivals. Last year, 58
local events were supported in Donegal, attracting
up to 14,000 visitors from overseas. The festivals
funded last year included Clonmany Community
Festival and the International Six Nations Sheep
Shearing Competition.
The national scheme is being administered locally by
Donegal County Council and funding applications and
awards will be decided in accordance with agreed
national criteria.
The local authority's director of services Liam Ward
said: "We all witnessed the benefits from The
Gathering and this scheme gives us an opportunity to
build on its legacy."
He urged anyone "with a good idea or interesting
event, which would help us to reach out to the
diaspora, to get in touch with us and make an
application”.
The application process is now open and will close
on March 11, 2016. The 2016 Community Tourism
Diaspora form can be downloaded from
