DONEGAL has woken up
today to another shocking early-hours crash in which
three young people lost their lives.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following the
latest fatal collision at Corravaddy, four miles
from Letterkenny.
It comes just 24 hours after yesterday's horrific
head-on collision in which Dermot Boyle (19) and
Barney McGinley (28) were killed.
The two were travelling in a grey Mitsubishi Carisma
hatchback that was involved in a collision with a
Renault van on the dual-carriageway at Trimragh,
Letterkenny.
The latest fatalities happened about 1am today in a
collision between two cars on a minor road.
Two men and one woman were pronounced dead at the
scene. Another man was seriously injured and taken
to Letterkenny University Hospital. The scene is
currently closed to traffic and diversions are in
place. A Garda forensic crash team has been
requested at the scene and the local coroner has
been notified.
The latest tragedy brings to six, the number of
people killed on Donegal roads so far this year.
It sees an unwelcome return of the multiple-fatality
crashes which dogged the county in the early
Noughties. Much road-safety work involving multiple
agencies had achieved lower road deaths in Donegal
and nationally in recent years.
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) said it had a
positive meeting this week with garda chiefs.
Speaking on Morning Ireland today, the RSA's chief
executive Moyagh Murdock said while a more visible
traffic garda presence helped reduce accidents,
drivers also needed to take personal responsibility
for their behaviour on the country's roads.
Investigations are ongoing and gardaí are appealing
for witnesses.
