THE winner of a Lotto
jackpot sold in Sligo and worth a whopping 8.2
million euro has come forward, the National Lottery
has confirmed.
The multi-million euro winning ticket was drawn on
March 5 with speculation rife as to whether the
winner could hail from neighbouring Donegal.
"The ticket holder has been in touch with the
National Lottery and we are now in the process of
engaging with them," a spokeswoman said yesterday.
However, she said she was not yet in a position to
reveal whether the winning ticket is held by an
individual or a syndicate nor where they live.
The lucky ticket for the biggest jackpot of the year
to date was bought at the XL Stop and Shop on
Stephen Street in Sligo.
The numbers drawn were 2, 8, 16, 24, 33, 42 and the
bonus was 47.
Shop owner Matt Lyons (70), a former mayor of the
town, told Inishowen News he's delighted the ticket
holder has made contact with the National Lottery.
"That's great news absolutely and we hope that
they're locals as well. It will be a great lift for
someone," he said.
The former councillor said there had been a
“significant” rise in customers playing Lotto at his
shop since the big win.
Five years ago the shop also sold a jackpot-winning
ticket worth 4.2 million euro.
Mr Lyons also said the ticket-seller’s commission –
about 15,000 euro – would be a welcome boost to the
family business.
"There's been a great buzz around the place and
everyone is keen to know whether it's been won
locally or not. We've had significantly more people
playing Lotto here in the past month since the big
win. It has been very good for the shop I have to
say," he added.
It is not clear when the National Lottery will be in
a position to release more details about the Sligo
win. The most recent winners to go public was a
12-member syndicate from the Bausch & Lomb Company
in Waterford. The lucky dozen won €2,578,134 from an
€8 normal play ticket on March 12. The prize divided
equally resulted in a hefty cheque of almost 215,000
euro each. |
