GARDAÍ will conduct a
national blitz on speeding drivers over a 24-hour
period later this week.
The national 'Slow Down' event, supported by the
Road Safety Authority, will run throughout the
country including Donegal from 7am to 7am on Friday
and Saturday, May 27-28.
The aim of the operation is to reduce the number of
speed-related collisions, save lives and reduce
injuries on our roads.
It is hoped the event will also increase compliance
with speed limits and act as a deterrent to
"excessive and inappropriate" speed.
2015 saw a reduction in road deaths - 27 fewer than
in 2014 - but speed is still "a major contributory
factor to road traffic collisions", officers say.
The operation will include checkpoints; a social
media campaign and display stands manned by garda
officers.
Public bodies and agencies have also been urged to
tell staff to 'Slow Down' while out and about doing
their work.
Garda National Traffic Bureau Chief Superintendent
Aidan Reid said:
"We are asking all drivers to support the national
'Slow Down' day and not exceed the posted speed
limit, but also as importantly, by adjusting their
speed to all the road, traffic and weather
conditions they face at that time. It goes without
saying this is not only for one day, but for every
day. We are asking people to support it, slow down
and save lives.” |
