Council hit with €15.3m flood
damage bill

DONEGAL County Council
has received a hammerblow to its finances ahead of
winter with confirmation that recent flooding caused
an estimated €13.45m damage to roads in Inishowen.
Almost a further €2m in damage was caused to roads
and infrastructure in the Letterkenny, Stranorlar
and Donegal municipal districts when the floods hit
on August 22. These figures do not include the tens
of thousands of euro in damage caused to homes.
The total repair cost for roads infrastructure in
the county including 600 separate incidents in
Inishowen is now estimated at €15.3m. Damage to some
115 bridges was caused and up to a quarter of these
may have to be replaced.
The council outlined the figures in its latest
update which also outlined the expected timeframe
for repairs and road re-openings. The R244 at
Craignahorna on the Mountain Road between Buncrana
and Carndonagh is expected to open in four weeks.
Local diversions are not suitable for HGVs which are
asked to use main roads.
The R240 at Riverside between Quigleys Point and
Carndonagh is now open to single lane traffic.
Motorists are asked to remember that there is a 20
tonne weight restriction on this road and for this
reason it is not suitable for HGVs.

The L-1781-6 Grainne's
Gap is now open with a small diversion at
Thompsontown bridge. This bridge is due to open on
Friday 15 September.
Meanwhile, 59 families have registered as being
displaced with solutions been found for 31 families.
"In many of these cases, this is an interim solution
until such times as they are in a position to move
back to their home. Some have already moved to their
new accommodation, and in other cases arrangements
are being finalised or the Council is awaiting
responses to offers made. A number of cases do not
require action at this time and the Council
continues to work with all displaced households on a
case by case basis to addressing their housing
needs," the council said in its statement. It said
the council’s Housing Service continues to provide
support and assistance to those affected by the
floods. Swan Park in Buncrana remains closed due to
extensive damage. "The park is unsafe and we are
advising members of the public not to visit the
park," the council added.

closed:

L-53912 – Annagh
L-7451-1 - Drumskillen Road
L-7631-3 - Glenbridge Road
L-7641-1 – Gortcormican due to open on Friday,
September 29.
L-7681-1 - Lowertown Road/Gortcormican
L-7761-2 - Knowhead Road/Calfwarn
