55 Donegal schools celebrate Green Flags 18.05.17

SCHOOLS in Inishowen are among 55 across the county to be awarded Green Flags for their environmental efforts.
The majority of schools were seeing a renewal of their flags but three including Crana College, Buncrana, are now celebrating the award of their first Green Flag.
The other two are Castleshanaghan N.S., Letterkenny and Scoil Chaitriona in Ballyshannon.
The flags were awarded or retained in a number of categories including energy saving; litter and waste reduction; water conservation and biodiversity.
Schools from across Co Donegal attended the recent Green Flag ceremony in Letterkenny.
Other Inishowen recipients include St Joseph's N.S Lower, Illies; Scoil Naomh Padraig, Drumfries; Bocan Community Creche, Culdaff; Donagh N.S, Carndonagh; Scoil Mhuire, Gleneely; St Oran's N.S., Cockhill; St Mary's N.S, Malin Head; Scoil Cholmcille, Glengad and St Columb's N.S, Moville.
There was special congratulations too for Scoil Cholmcille in Letterkenny which was awarded its 9th Green Flag.
The Green Schools programme has been operating in Ireland for 20 years and is frequently regarded as best practice internationally.
Donegal County Council waste awareness officer Suzanne Bogan described its benefits to the entire community as "tremendous", adding "not only are we educating our pupils for the future but the positive environmental impacts each school is making cannot be underestimated".
