Official opening of North West
Cancer Centre

CO-OPERATING for Cancer
Care NorthWest, CCC(NW) were among the guests
yesterday celebrating the official opening of the
£50m North West Cancer Centre at Altnagelvin
Hospital, Derry.
The group campaigned for 12 years for the
much-needed facility which has ended the need for
long and stressful journeys to Dublin, Galway and
Belfast, for the majority of Donegal radiotherapy
patients. |

The centre began taking
in cancer patients six months ago.
"It has taken many years for this project to reach
its end goal and it's fantastic that treatments have
commenced. This is a time to celebrate," said a
spokesperson.
“CCC(NW) recognise the uniqueness of this cross
border project and we encourage governments and
departments of health, North and South, to use it as
a strong and positive template to develop further
partnerships (and) collaborations in cross border
healthcare provision into the future and that cross
border services are developed and delivered in
Letterkenny University Hospital as well as
Altnagelvin Hospital.”
CCC(NW) said it is proud of its "unique role"
ensuring that the radiotherapy unit had become a
reality. The centre was officially opened yesterday
by Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla,
who unveiled a plaque and met patients being treated
at the new centre. |

CCC(NW) added: "We
would like to applaud all our fellow campaigners and
politicians from either side of the border who have
also supported the development of this service."
The group also thanked the Radiotherapy Project Team
for their "hard work, commitment and determination"
to ensuring the success of the North West Cancer
Centre. |
