honoured in Canada

INISHOWEN born, Aidan
O’Hara, was recently honoured with a lifetime
achievement award by the Newfoundland Folk Arts
Society in Canada. Aidan, who was born in Muff, was
a former presenter/producer at RTÉ and made hundreds
of recordings of the stories and songs of the people
he met in Newfoundland in the 1970s. In 1977 he
co-founded and was the first programme director of
the Newfoundland Folk Festival. |

When The Irish
Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) launched Aidan’s
1970s digitised Newfoundland song collection (
www.itma.ie/newfoundland ), ITMA’s Director,
Grace Toland from Clonmany, said: “It was an
important and moving occasion to bring the
collections home to Newfoundland and also to share
this extraordinary story with the world online".
The wording on the award from the society states:
'Lifetime Achievement Award presented to Aidan
O'Hara for a lifetime of outstanding service and
dedication to the traditional folk arts of the
province of Newfoundland and Labrador'. |
