Prehistoric gold artefacts found
in Donegal

THE finders and the
local community have been thanked by both Donegal
County Museum and the National Museum of Ireland
following the discovery on Tuesday of significant
artefacts which appear to date from the bronze age.
Eileen Burgess, Cultural Services Manager with
Donegal County Council said “the Donegal County
Museum was delighted to assist our colleagues in the
National Museum in the recovery and safekeeping of
this gold hoard. We would like to sincerely thank
the finders and the local community for reporting
this find and following best archaeological and
farming practice. The County Museum looks forward to
working with the National Museum to discover more
about this exciting prehistoric find”. |

Experts from the
National Museum of Ireland travelled to the site
where the artefacts were discovered and carried out
a thorough investigation of the area for evidence of
how and when the important artefacts were deposited.
The Director of the National Museum, Ms Lynn Scarf
said 'The National Museum of Ireland is delighted by
the news of this exciting find. The museum would
like to recognise the cooperation of the finders and
the local community in Donegal.'
Following their discovery, the artefacts were
immediately removed from the site and transferred to
The National Museum of Ireland. They will be put on
display as soon as initial investigations are
concluded. |
