Donegal is second luckiest county
in Ireland
30.07.18
WHEN it comes to Lotto
wins Donegal has been the second luckiest county
over the last 30 years.
The National Lottery today unveiled Ireland’s
Luckiest Lotto counties calculating the number of
jackpot winners since the game launched in 1988
against 2016 Census population records.
The “Luckiest Lotto Counties” data shows that Co.
Louth, known as “the Wee County”, boasts the most
Lotto millionaires per head of population since
Lotto launched three decades ago, with an incredible
76 lucky Lotto jackpot winners who have won in
excess of €89 million between them; that’s 5.9 Lotto
jackpot winners for every 10,000 people!
Coming a close second place is Co. Donegal, which
has clocked up 90 Lotto jackpot winners in 30 years,
sharing over €116 million in prizes. Based on the
Census 2016 population figures, that’s 5.65 Lotto
jackpot winners for every 10,000 people in the
county. |

Speaking on the release
of the “Luckiest Lotto Counties” survey National
Lottery CEO, Dermot Griffin said: “One of the most
frequent questions we are asked is what is Ireland’s
luckiest Lotto county. There has always been
friendly competition amongst our players all over
the country to claim this title, so we are delighted
to confirm that using the 2016 Census population
figures, Co. Louth is Ireland’s luckiest spot.”
“While Lotto players in Louth and Donegal have
enjoyed most success in the Lotto game per head of
population, these findings do not have any bearing
on who may be a future Lotto winner!” he added.
According to the National Lottery’s findings,
players in Co. Laois have been the unluckiest county
in Ireland with 1.53 Lotto winners per 10,000
inhabitants.
