Retired doctor pens poetry collection 06.03.18

GUILDHALL Press recently hosted the launch of the debut collection of poetry by retired general practitioner Vincent Cavanagh. The book 'Pay No Heed to the Helicopter' is described as being from "the pen of a poet whose sensibilities are finely tuned to the human condition". Dr Cavanagh worked as a GP in Derry from 1964 with experience in psychiatry at Gransha Hospital. He was also medical director of the Northlands Centre from its inception in 1975 until 2010. He was awarded the Macklin Prize for Poetry in 2005. Many poems in his first collection have themes related to the trauma and suffering caused to innocent people caught up in the Troubles. The poems are gathered in five subsections and include titles such as 'Inch Lake in November'; 'The Colours of Another Day'; 'The Birdman of Meadowbank'; 'The Girls of Aberfoyle'; 'Inis Fail' and 'Photograph of Norrie'.

The 106-page book is dedicated to the poet's wife Nora, daughter Joan and granddaughter Asha. There are also special acknowledgements for his son Stephen for illustrations in the book as well as Greencastle-based Raymond Craig without whom, he says, the "book would not have happened". Author Mary Murphy sums up the book as a collection that "finely articulates our yearning for permanence and understanding in the face of a shifting reality which evades us at every turn".
