Donegal winners of the Good Causes
Awards

THE Spraoi agus Sport
Family Centre in Carndonagh is among six Donegal
organisations named as winners in the first ever
National Lottery Good Causes Awards.
The awards honour the inspiring work of thousands of
projects, clubs and individuals all over Ireland.
Nearly 30 cent of every euro spent on National
Lottery games goes back to Good Causes, which has a
big impact on communities across the country.
Announcing the Donegal winners, National Lottery CEO,
Dermot Griffin said: “We were bowled over by the
calibre of entries and the impact that these
organisations are having in their local communities.
We know that these groups are doing extraordinary
things and the Good Causes awards recognize and
celebrate their achievements.” |

The Donegal County
winners are:
> Community: Spraoi agus Sport Family Centre
The Spraoi agus Sport Family Centre is a not for
profit, social enterprise located in Carndonagh,
providing services for children, families, young
people and older people from across the Inishowen
peninsula. Good Causes funding helped it sustain its
“Time for Us” programme, which provides alternative
daytime respite for children with a disability.
> Sport: Killybegs GAA
Killbegs GAA Club caters for over 500 members with
teams at all levels from under 8 to adult. Good
Causes funding helped it fit out the first floor of
its club house to accommodate a new gym and meeting
room.
> Health & Wellbeing: Liquid Therapy Bundoran
Liquid Therapy is a not for profit foundation that
provides ocean, surf, and water therapy for young
people with physical, emotional, behavioral or
intellectual needs. Good Causes funding allowed it
provide surf boards and body suits for a growing
number of members.
> Heritage: Kilmacrennan Abbey Preservation Society
The society is a small rural group that is
passionate about conserving Kilmacrennan Abbey and
graveyard which has links with St. Colmcille. Good
Causes funding allowed it develop a conservation
plan to restore the Abbey.
> Arts & Culture: An Grianan Theatre
This is a dynamic youth theatre which has been
making plays and developing confidence and social
engagement to three generations of young people.
Good Causes funding has covered the cost of
employing professionals to work with children and
young people from economically disadvantaged
backgrounds.
> Youth: Donegal Youth Service
The Donegal Youth Service runs Daybreak, a unique
project for young people aged 12-15 years who are
experiencing difficulty in school. Good Causes
funding has helped sustain the project which has
resulted in a huge improvements in young people’s
school attendance.
These winners will represent Donegal in the northern
regional finals, competing for a place in the
national finals in Dublin on the 3rd of November
2018. Broadcaster and entrepreneur Bobby Kerr, chair
of the judging panel, concluded “The standard of
entries is really impressive. I congratulate all of
the county winners and look forward to seeing
Donegal competing in the regional finals.”
Each category winner will receive €10,000 and the
overall Good Cause of the Year will receive an
additional €25,000. |
