Unique artwork to go on display at
Moville Library

A UNIQUE work of art
celebrating the life of a medieval Irish saint is to
go on display for one day only in Moville.
The portrait of Saint Sunniva, an Irish princess and
nun, is a stunning mixed-media work of intricate
beadwork and ornamental embroidery created by local
artist Mary Lorraine McHugh.
It celebrates the life of the 10th Century saint
who, forced to flee Ireland under threat of
persecution, landed on an island in Western Norway,
where she is now celebrated as patron saint. |

Moville Library on Friday, September 13, 2019 from
9.30am to 5.30pm. |
The 4ft x 4ft portrait
is part of a wider collection of works by Ms McHugh
that celebrate the important but often forgotten
contribution made by female saints to Christianity.
The Saint Sunniva artwork took an astonishing two
years to create and has already been seen by
Norwegian diplomats with a view to bringing the
canvas for permanent display to the Scandinavian
country.
However, art lovers and locals will have the chance
to see the impressive work close up when it goes on
display this week in Moville.
Ms McHugh is also in the process of creating a
number of prints and cards depicting Irish medieval
saints, called Shrine Art, that would be ideal for
anyone looking for something special to own or to
gift.
“The portrait of Saint Sunniva has been a labour of
love for some time and I’m delighted to display her
for others to see this week,” said Ms McHugh.
