Carn TY students
bring Christmas cheer to older people
18.12.20
DONEGAL Age Friendly
Programme, with the help of Transition Year (TY)
students, have been spreading the Christmas cheer by
reaching out to older people living in long term
residential care.
Nursing homes are one of the services that have been
most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. In order to
protect the older residents in these homes, all visits
from family members and friends had to stop. This has
created a lot of sadness, confusion, loneliness and
feelings of exclusion from society. |

School delivering packs to the staff of Carndonagh
Community Hospital. |
As an intergenerational
project, council staff worked in partnership with TY
students throughout Donegal, including Carndonagh
Community School, to deliver Christmas packs of cheer to
nursing home residents. The TY students wrapped the
individual gifts along with writing a personalised card
to the older person.
The pack contained a shower gel and deodorant for
personal care, an activity booklet and colouring pencils
to keep the mind active, a simple exercise programme to
encourage them to keep moving, a personalised Christmas
card and a treat.
Council staff at the Age Friendly Programme were delighted to bring a
little joy this Christmas to 23 nursing homes and their
800 residents in Donegal and plan more residential care
projects in the new year. |
