Arty children shine in new
calendar
28.10.10
PAINTINGS by children
in Greencastle will feature on the walls of many
homes next year in a beautiful 2011 calendar to be
launched next week.
The Inishowen Maritime Museum invited all the
children at Scoil Cholmcille to submit artwork for
the new calendar through an art competition themed
'Living by the Sea'.
The main focus of the project was to encourage the
children to explore and become more aware of the
wonderful environment around them.
Inishowen Maritime Museum manager, Gemma Havlin and
Scoil Cholmcille principal, Annie McCartney, were
astounded at the quality of the work submitted.
"We have been overwhelmed by the beautiful
collection of colourful, cheerful and imaginative
paintings created by the children," said Gemma.
"They must be credited for having taken such
ownership of the project and they have certainly
impressed with their talent and vision."
Before starting their artwork, each class discussed
different aspects of living by the sea and completed
their work based on their chosen theme. Topics
included in the calendar drawings are fishing, the
sea shore, emigration, the ferry, the Coast Guard
and lighthouses, to name just a few. |

Scoil Cholmcille
principal, Annie McCartney, said the finished
calendar was a "delightful work of art" and one the
children of Greencastle could be very proud to call
their own.
While 12 pictures feature for each month of the
year, everyone's a winner with all the submitted
paintings appearing on the front cover and
throughout the calendar.
The winners will be announced and all the artists
presented with a certificate at the calendar's
official launch in the Inishowen Maritime Museum on
Thursday, November 4, at 7pm. All proceeds from
sales will go to the museum and the school.
Gemma Havlin added: "The launch will be a
celebration for the children for their wonderful
work and dedication to the project. We will be
displaying all the children's original paintings and
we hope that there will be a great attendance.
Everyone is invited." |
