A PUBLIC meeting was
held last night in a bid to urge An Post to retain
Carrigans Post Office. Around 700 people have
already signed a petition asking the company not to
axe the border outlet.
The petition began after postmistress Bernie Moore
failed in her appeal to have An Post reverse its
decision to terminate her contract. The decision to
end the franchise is being linked to an armed raid
at the premises in February 2009.
Meanwhile, Senator Cecilia Keaveney has had
discussions with An Post regarding Carrigans PO and
last night she urged the company to meet local
people to discuss the matter.
“Given that there is a potential for legal action,
An Post has advised that they cannot attend the
public meeting at this time but they stated that
they are committed to having a post office in
Carrigans,” said Senator Keaveney.
"There is a very strong local support for the local
postmistress. There is also a strong empathy for how
difficult it is to run post offices particularly in
border locations in an era of armed robberies.
“The aspect of how well An Post equips our post
office operators to maximise their personal safety
as well as the security of the money was a key
concern of mine when I contacted An Post. They say
that they are equally concerned for safety and
security and have measures, procedures and equipment
which properly resource post offices."
An Post told Senator Keaveney they could not comment
further for legal reasons. However, the company did
confirm to her that An Post was "committed to
providing services in rural Ireland" and reiterated
their commitment to Carrigans.
“I would like to see this situation brought to a
speedy resolution. We need safe, secure local
infrastructure and our post offices are the heart of
our towns and villages. Whatever support is needed
to deliver this must be found." |
