Rosaleen hailed as ‘genius
knitter’

A TOP fashion designer has hailed a Buncrana woman
as a ‘genius knitter’ and praised her work in
assisting his design collection.
Jonathan Anderson, who is originally from
Magherafelt in County Derry is fast making a name
for himself in the world of fashion.
In an interview, he praised the work of Buncrana
woman Rosaleen Hegarty and Crana Knits. He said: “I
found this genius knitter, Rosaleen Hegarty in
Buncrana, who knows everything.
“She has 40 women knitting away and has knitted for
Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Paul Costelloe and John
Rocha.
“We went to the Ulster Museum together and saw this
Aran sweater that had been found in a peat bog. She
worked out the patterns simply by looking at them.
That redone cardigan is in my new collection.
Another jumper, in blue denim yarn, has sold to
every store.” |

Rosaleen Hegarty said:
“I have been doing work for Jonathan Anderson for
some time.
“A couple of years ago I was working with a company
in Cookstown training their knitters and Jonathan
was looking for someone to knit for him.
“Since then I have done all his collections for him
and all of his samples.
“Last year we sold into Harrods, Liberty’s, ASOS and
Sunspel.”
Rosaleen said that Jonathan Anderson would be at the
top end of the market but would not be her biggest
customer.
She said: “I have been to his collection in Paris
and it is good to work on the collections for London
and Paris and the like.”
Jonathan Anderson has been hailed as a talented
designer fast making a name in the world of fashion.
Anderson, who only launched his first collection a
year ago, is known for his sophisticated,
craft-based, street style collections with a
boy/girl resonance. His T-shirts, featuring tie-dyed
doilies, have given a shot in the arm to this emblem
of gentile Victorian afternoon teas; his denim
pinafores have a slightly Amish quality, while his
Aran cardigans have become bestsellers. |
