“The Donegal Heritage
'Life & Lore' Collection tells part of the story of
County Donegal through the lives, and in the words,
of some of its residents,” said Donegal heritage
officer, Joseph Gallagher.
“The interviewees are drawn from all over the county
and address various aspects of our heritage. These
diverse accounts of life, heritage and culture in
County Donegal make an important contribution to
capturing our sense of place and will prove to be an
important archive in the future.”
An archive of over 1,500 recordings have been
compiled by Maurice and Jane O'Keeffe since 1990. As
they are commissioned by the local authorities |
of each county, they
travel the highways and byways of Ireland recording
the oral history there. Each recording is produced
on an individual CD of approximately one-hour
duration.
The Donegal collection was commissioned by the
County Donegal Heritage Office, the County Donegal
Heritage Forum and The Heritage Council as part of
the County Donegal Heritage Plan (2007-2011). The
collection can be consulted free-of-charge through
the Library Service. The launch will take place next
Wednesday at 1.30pm and is open to the public. Light
refreshments will be served from 1pm.
