Here comes the 'older' Donegal

THE average age that
men and women in Co Donegal marry continues to rise,
new figures show.
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) league shows
that the average age of a Donegal groom in 2007 was
32.6 years while the average age of his Donegal
bride was 30.3 years. This was slightly younger than
the average national age of 33.4 years for men and
31.3 years for women.
There were 1,010 marriages registered in Co Donegal
in 2007.
The breakdown shows that in 29 weddings, the groom
was between 40 and 44 years; in 17 weddings the
groom was between 45 and 49 years; in 10 cases, the
groom was between 50 and 54 years , in five cases,
he was aged between 55 and 59 while in eight
nuptials, the groom was aged 60 and over.
For brides, 14 were between 40 and 44 years; eight
were between 45 and 49, ten were between 50 and 54;
five between 55 and 59 and three were aged 60 and
over. |
Of the 1,010 marriages
registered in the county in 2007, 832 were Catholic
ceremonies; 37 were Church of Ireland; 31 were
Presbyterian; eight were other religious
denominational services while 102 were civil
marriages.
Nationally, the CSO statistics reveal that some
22,756 marriages were registered in 2007 – a rate of

Nearly three-quarters of all marriages were Catholic
ceremonies, compared to a total of 90 per cent in
1996.
A total of 5,146 of marriages in 2007 were civil
ceremonies. This was a slight increase of 19 on the
2006 figure. In 1996, however, just 6 per cent of
marriages were civil ceremonies. The CSO attributes
this to the legalisation of divorce here.
Meanwhile, August was the most popular month for
weddings, with 15 per cent of marriages taking place
in that month in 2007. Marriages in June, July,
August and September accounted for 54 per cent of
all marriages in the year. Only 3% of marriages took
place in January. The most popular days of the week
for weddings were Friday and Saturday – accounting
for 72 per cent of the total. |
