Fiddle classes strike chord in
Newtown

EVER fancied yourself as the next Yehudi Menuhin or
Tommy Peoples? If so, then Newtown is the place to
go, where an introductory course in playing the
violin is proving a big hit with the folk of South
West Inishowen.
Budding fiddlers can learn a tune within two weeks
of starting the class, according to co-ordinator,
Stewart Buchanan.
“This is a perfect opportunity for anyone who always
wanted to try their hand at the fiddle. Anyone can
have a go. People come to me who are completely tone
deaf, yet two weeks later they can play a tune,” he
said.
“People with a good ear for music tend to learn much
quicker but equally someone with no musical talent
can progress on the instrument too.” |

The course, which is
funded by the Ulster Scots Agency, is open to
everyone with a nominal fee of only €3 per person.
“Everyone is welcome to attend the classes. We have
a pianist and a piper, who always wanted to learn
the fiddle. Another woman travels all the way from
Lurgan because there is nothing like this where she
lives. I also teach one man in his seventies!”
Stewart said.
Stewart’s class caters for a wide variety of musical
styles, from Scottish and Irish to US Gospel. The
course will culminate with a public performance,
possibly at local old people’s homes.
Amiable Newtown man, Stewart, said he has had a
great response to the class so far and hopes it will
continue to be well supported.
