O Luain welcomes UN Gaza findings 27.09.10

CARNDONAGH man Fiachra O Luain has welcomed the findings of the UN investigation into an Israeli attack on a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla.
A UN report published last week found that Israel violated human rights and broke the law when its troops stormed the aid flotilla in May.
Mr O Luain, 27, and three other Irish citizens gave evidence to the UN inquiry. He has now called on the Irish Government to make good on promises made following the incident that made headlines all over the world.
“Despite the early promises and reassurances that the Irish Government would do all it could to pursue our cases, demanding justice and the return of our property from Israel, Mr Cowen and Minister Martin have been missing in action all summer,” he said.
Fiachra Ó Luain waves a Donegal flag as he joined the Gaza-bound peace flotilla back in May 2010.
“The summer recess is over, the facts are on the table in black and white and we need to know from the Taoiseach what the promised 'serious consequences' will be. I suggest that as a party to the Rome Conventions, Ireland prosecute Israel for the attack on the Comoros-registered ‘Mavi Marmara’ while Turkey cannot.”
A letter sent last month by Mr O Luain to US Senator John Kerry has received a lot of attention in the Turkish media.
In his open letter, first published in the Boston-based ‘Irish Emigrant’, he requests that Mr Kerry, as chairman of the Senate Committee Foreign Relations, call for a hearing into the attack that left a 19 year old US citizen dead along with eight others. Mr O Luain also reminded Senator Kerry that the US-registered Challenger 1 vessel was attacked in international waters; and therefore was legally identical to an attack on US territory. Meanwhile, the Carn man, who holds dual Irish-US citizenship, is asking readers to take the time to contact their elected representatives directly and demand action on the issue.
