Inishowen hairdressers a cut above 06.12.10

TALENTED young hairdressers from Inishowen are celebrating huge success at a major competition for stylists.
The students, who train at the North West Regional College School for Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy, took a number of trophies at the recent Northern Ireland Hairdressing Association competition in Belfast.
They claimed top prizes in both the Junior and Senior Creative Fantasy competitions, as well as recognition in the Junior Full Fashion Look.
To win first place in the senior competition, Level 3 student Tara Henderson from Buncrana had to outperform professional hairdressers, including college lecturer Susan Cassidy who placed 3rd. Tara’s stunning creation ‘Phantom of the Opera’ impressed the judges, and gained the talented student the top prize. “I have entered the competition before, but I never imagined I could win this category – I was just so pleased that all the hard work paid off,” said Tara. She also won 2nd place in the Junior event.

from Clonmany just edged ahead of Tara for 1st place thanks to her daring New York themed creation, in the Junior Creative Fantasy, and was followed by fellow students, Ciara Barber (Level 3), also from Buncrana, Loretta Kenny and Joanne Arthur (both Combined Hair & Beauty Year 2), who picked up the 3rd, 4th, and 6th places respectively.

The College’s success was capped off with Level 2 trainees Grainne Meehan and Saoirse Kearney who both placed in the top 10 in the Junior Full Fashion Look.
“We are very proud of all the students who competed,” said Susan Casssidy “they prepared thoroughly, worked diligently, and brought innovation and creativity to life." Tara’s success in the Senior competition is remarkable and the range of accolades won across the board made this the most successful representation from the College at the prestigious event.”
The competition was good preparation for the staff and students who hope to test their skills further by entering the UK Hairdressing Championships in Blackpool in March 2011.
Hair and beauty students at the Strand Road Campus will be among those who will benefit from the new £20m development, due to open in Spring 2011. Salons, open to the public, will be located on the top floor of the new building on Boating Club Lane, allowing clients to enjoy their styling and treatments overlooking stunning views of the River Foyle.
