LABOUR'S Donegal North
East election candidate Cllr Jimmy Harte has warned
that the IMF and EU bail-out of Ireland "will have
serious implications for Donegal"
Cllr Harte said that as a businessman and father, he
was concerned for many small businesses in the
county.
He said he feared that many local families could see
their incomes and benefits slashed as a result of
IMF intervention. But he said a stable Government
brought about by the upcoming general election would
bring "some stability on the political front".
“There are so many middle-income families that are
struggling with personal debt and this will be
another blow to their survival. The crisis has been
caused by internal incompetence and we are now
depending on the goodwill of foreign nations to sort
out our problems," said Cllr Harte.
“The economy of Donegal is full of vibrant and
hard-working small businesses, farmers, public
servants, and many more individuals who worked to
make this county a proud place to work and live in.
However, we have the biggest challenge to face in
the history and what the country is crying out for
is leadership to navigate our way out of what is a
frightful situation."
He said Donegal people had shown, in the past, that
they could create jobs and work hard to sustain
them. "As a business person myself I know the
difficulty of maintaining jobs in good times but in
recessionary times it is worrying to staff and
unless we get a stable government in place soon, the
confidence of Donegal people will ebb away. I am
relieved to hear the Greens has at last recognised
what the country has realised for many months, that
this Government is long passed its sell-by date and
that it is incapable of leading the country to
economic recovery.”
Taoiseach Brian Cowen last night said he would
dissolve the Dáil after the budget on December 7, is
passed. |
