Marie's trek for heart patients 15.02.10
ALL roads lead to Spain
for a Buncrana woman, who is raising €2,500 for the
Irish Heart Foundation. Marie Porter is currently
training every day in preparation for El Camino de
Santiago, a 140km pilgrimage spanning the Galicia
region in northwest Spain.
El Camino de Santiago – The Way of St. James – is a
one thousand year old walk, which leads to The
Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
Legend holds that St. James' remains were carried by
boat from Jerusalem to northern Spain where he was
buried on the site of what is now the city of
Santiago de Compostela.
Marie, from the Railway Road in Buncrana, said it
fulfills a lifetime ambition of hers to take part in
the six-day Spanish expedition next May. |

“I saw an advert in a
paper and thought I would apply. It is something I
have always wanted to do and it’s for a good cause
too,” she said.
The affable Buncrana woman opened a charity shop in
the town for the past two weeks and remains busy
raising funds ahead of the trip. So far she has
raised almost €1,000 of her €2,500 |
target.
“People have been so generous with their money. Some
customers have bagged a bargain in the shop while
others bought tickets or simply made donations to
the foundation,” Marie said.
Marie, a former teacher at Scoil Mhuire, also paid
tribute to John and Sadie Bradley, who donated the
use of their premises, on Buncrana Main Street,
rent-free for two weeks.
Money raised by Marie will be used to help train up
to one hundred people in CPR, a potentially
life-saving skill.
A flower-arranging night, which will be held prior
to Easter, will also raise funds towards Marie’s
charity walk. Anyone who wants to sponsor Maria or
donate to her worthy cause can call her on
