Donegal without two TDs
03.11.10
DONEGAL is now without
two TDs following yesterday's shock resignation of
Dr Jim McDaid.
Dr McDaid said he handed in his resignation to
expedite the holding of a general election before
the Budget on December 7. He said holding off on a
general election would cost Ireland dearly when it
went to the bond markets next Spring.
The Letterkenny-based representative's resignation
took everyone by surprise not least in Inishowen
where Sinn Féin's Cllr Padráig MacLochlainn and
Fianna Fáil senator, Cecilia Keaveney are once again
eyeing up the vacant seat. |
Councillor MacLochlainn
said the Government was now on "its last legs": “The
Government has left the people of Donegal South West
without proper representation for eighteen months up
to now. This must not be allowed to happen again in
Donegal North East. Donegal is now short two TDs and
any notion that the Donegal South West by-election
would be held in isolation cannot now be taken
seriously."
He added: “Both these seats, along with the seats in
Dublin South and Waterford |

must be filled at the
earliest opportunity.
"Jim McDaid’s resignation is a signal that time is
now up for this Government and a general election
should be called."
Senator Keaveney told Sean O'Rourke on RTE's News at
One that it was her understanding that the
'bye-elections' would be held next Spring.
Pressed on whether she had insider knowledge about
the timing of the Dublin South and Waterford
bye-elections given that the Government had
previously only indicated a Spring date for Donegal
South West, she said the reporter's question had
been initially about Donegal.
She said she did not believe a general election was
prudent claiming there was no alternative to the
current Government in providing the country with
stability. |
