Calls for 'John Hume Peace Bridge'
26.10.10
THERE have been calls
for Derry's new pedestrian peace bridge to be named
after John Hume who has been voted 'Ireland's
Greatest'.
The accolade for the Nobel peace laureate, was
announced on the Late, Late Show on Friday following
several weeks of voting by public.
Earlier in the evening, John Hume was at the
Brandywell for the Derry City v Finn Harps showdown.
Supporters got busy texting their votes for the
former SDLP leader, when voting details were
announced over the tannoy before the match and at
half time. |
Mr Hume said in a
statement at the weekend: “It is a tremendous honour
to have been voted into first place for the
Ireland’s Greatest award. My family and I were
delighted that people had shortlisted me to the
final five with such outstanding figures. . .This
award obviously recognises the contribution of my
wife and family over many years as well as others
who worked with me.”
SDLP leader, Margaret Ritchie said a fitting tribute
to recognise Mr Hume's latest achievement would be
the naming of the Derry bridge, currently under
construction, The John Hume Peace Bridge.
Foyle MP Mark Durkan said Mr Hume was central to the
decades-long pursuit of peace in the North. |

“People can write
memoirs that put them at the centre of the peace
process, at the centre of agreement and
breakthrough, but it was John Hume who drew the map
and wrote the plan and led the way. He provided the
sat-nav that brought everyone from their different
and hopeless positions to the place of peace, shared
institutions and stability.” |
