Minister Mary Coughlan is "fully behind" further
collaboration between Letterkenny Inistitute of
Technology and Magee Campus, Derry.
She made her comments at a recent Joint Oireachtas
Education Committee meeting at which she assured
Senator Cecilia Keaveney that she and her colleagues
in the North were committed to nurturing ongoing
synergies between the two campuses. |
"Minister Coughlan is
very aware of the synergies that can take place
between institutions. She is conscious of the
success to date of the workings that are going on
between Letterkenny and Derry," said Senator
Keaveney.
"I found it particularly pleasing that she stated
that herself and Minister Reg Empey were in
agreement that there had been lots of talk around
and studies on the issue and they were looking now
towards seeing further expansion actually take
place."
The Moville-based representative said the expansion
of co-operation between LYIT and Magee would drive
forward the concept of a North West University. |

She said Ms Coughlan
was also be pushing to sell Ireland as a centre of
learning to students abroad.
"It is vital to put the two concepts together. By
the expansion of co-operation to drive a strong
University for the North West and being specific
about where we, at national level, attract foreign
students into, while also maintaining our local
cohort of student numbers, we have a potential map
for job creation, particularly if the Government
would identify our region as core to their
strategy," said Senator Keaveney.
"It is positive to hear the minister strongly
endorsing the need for an all-island approach to
education. I intend to continue to pursue this
concept," she added. |
