Mayor opts for her Donegal shore 15.10.10

THE Mayor of Donegal, Cllr Cora Harvey has confirmed she will not be travelling to the US or anywhere on St Patrick's Day next year. The Mayor said her party, Sinn Féin, was "never fully convinced" of the value of trips to the US for the patron saint's day.
“I have always questioned why the mayor always leaves their county - why shouldn’t the mayor celebrate an Irish celebration on Irish soil and more specifically in their own county," said Cllr Harvey.
"We have always accepted invitations to go abroad on St. Patrick’s day - isn’t it time that we started issuing some invites instead and bring money into the county?" she asked.
"I believe now more than ever that we should be promoting St Patrick's Day at home. This particular date has huge tourism potential and I firmly believe that this needs to be built upon. We need to use this time of the year when people become “100% Irish” especially those who live abroad and encourage our people to come home if at all possible."
She said she had bee impressed by the Donegal Live programme and would like to see it "expanded with a twist".
"Keep Donegal Live alive but in Donegal. We need to market Donegal in Donegal - have a fun-filled week in Donegal with a key event on St Patrick's Day. We could pick any time of the year but I believe it would be best to build upon an already established date such as St. Patricks Day - when the Irish become really Irish and the rest of the world become Irish for that day.” She said her idea may not come to fruition for 2011 but the county could make a start and continue to grow the event in the year to come.
