Farren calls for one-way Moville 24.09.10

by Caoimhinn Barr, Inishowen Independent

LABOUR Councillor Martin Farren has called for a one-way traffic system to be adopted in Moville on a trial basis. Cllr Farren said he also wants better pedestrian crossings earmarked for the Foyleside town, which is home to around 1,500 residents.
“I am calling on the road design team to consider implementing a one-way system in James’ Street for a period of six-months to see if it would be feasible as a permanent solution to traffic problems in Moville,” he said, at an Inishowen electoral area meeting.
“It was pointed out to me that traffic lights would slow up the flow of traffic on Moville Main Street but I think it is important that we install some form of controlled pedestrian crossings because there is a large volume of traffic going through the town, particularly with visitors coming over on the ferry in the summer months.”

County Council roads engineer Stephen Flynn said he had no problem in assessing Moville Main Street with a view to the installation of pedestrian crossings - if they were found to be needed.
Meanwhile Cllr. Farren has also requested better signage towards one of Moville’s best-known landmarks, the Cooley Cross, an historic relic situated one mile outside the town.
“A group of people are doing great work with the Cooley Cross and they are seeking three signs to point visitors towards the tourist attraction. One is needed on Moville’s Main Street while two more are needed near Summerhill. It is important that we get these installed in time for the tourist season next year,” Cllr. Farren added.
