Moville principal slates ‘flawed’ list 10.02.10

AN Inishowen principal has hit out at a league table
that claims to document the top 400 secondary
schools in Ireland.
Moville Community College head, Anthony Doogan, said
the Sunday Times list, published last weekend, was
‘fundamentally flawed.’
“The list implies that you are only a good school if
90% or more of students go on to university. It
implies that you are a failure if pupils don’t go to
third level colleges,” he said. |

“We cater for all
levels of ability at Moville Community College. We
offer an extensive special needs programme for
students with learning disabilities, who are less
likely to go to university,” Mr Doogan added.
“We also train pupils for trade and apprenticeships,
which the list |
does not credit. We
would be totally failing our students if we only
focused on those individuals who aspire to go to
university.”
Mr Doogan also highlighted the fact that a sizeable
number of pupils from Moville Community College, who
graduate to the North West Institute in Derry, are
not accounted for in the poll.
Scoil Mhuire, Buncrana, was the highest placed
Inishowen school on the list, at number 270, with
Moville Community College at 367 and Carndonagh
Community School at 388. |
