College braces itself for job cuts

THE North West Regional
College in Derry yesterday said it will lobby all
its stakeholders in a bid to prevent the loss of up
to 70 lecturing and other posts.
The college, which employs a number of teaching
staff from Inishowen, is bracing itself for a round
of severe public service funding cuts.
College management has informed staff that
redundancies may occur as a result of these cuts.
”This issue was discussed by management and college
staff during a recent general staff meeting at the
college. The actual number of redundancies is not
yet known," said the college, in a statement. |
"During the
discussions, staff and management at the college
voiced their intentions to do everything in their
power to minimise these redundancies, and provide
every possible assistance to staff that may be
affected.
"The college also believes that any staff
redundancies resulting from proposed budgetary cuts
would have a huge impact on the entire region, and

statement.
The NWRC delivers courses at nine locations
throughout Derry, Strabane and Limavady.
Derry Sinn Féin Councillor Maeve McLaughlin said the
development was "extremely concerning".
"To lose so many teaching staff would be a
devastating blow to the college and the staff
involved. It would also have a huge impact on the
region as a whole, taking a significant amount of
disposable income out of the local economy." |
