Ó Maonlaí sings for local schools

TWO Inishowen
Irish-speaking schools are holding a fundraising
concert this week to celebrate the success of Irish
medium education in the peninsula.
Coláiste Chineál Eoghain, based in Tullyarvan Mill
in Buncrana and Gaelscoil Cois Feabhail based in
Moville will be holding the concert on Wednesday,
October 20, in McGrory's, Culdaff. Performing on the
night will be Liam Ó Maonlaí (lead singer of The
Hothouse Flowers), Steafán Hanvey and The Henry
Girls. |

They hope that the
night will not only raise funds but also hope to
promote the schools.
Coláiste Chineál Eoghain was founded in September
2007 by Donegal VEC to ensure the provision of Irish
medium secondary education in the Inishowen and
Derry areas.
Inishowen has a long history of Irish medium
preschool provision with the establishment of
Naíscoil Cois Feabhail in Moville in 1996, Naíscoil
Domhnach Óg in Carndonagh in 1997 and Naíonra Bhun
Crannacha in 1997.
The peninsula has two Irish medium National
schools,Gaelscoil Bhun Crannacha in Buncrana with
180 pupils enrolled and Gaelscoil Cois Feabhail,
Moville with an enrolment of 100 pupils. These
National schools were established in a response to
demand by parents to have their children educated
through Irish.
And 2007 saw the opening of Inishowen’s first Irish
medium secondary school in Buncrana, Coláiste
Chineál Eoghain, which provides secondary education
for pupils both from Irish speaking and English
speaking National schools.
Schools Principal Éabha Ní Mhonacháin said: “Many
parents and people in the locality may not be aware
that their children can be educated from nursery
level to secondary level through the medium of
Irish. The night will hopefully promote and
publicise the existence of these schools in
Inishowen and the good work and progress which has
been done to date.”
