THE trial of two men charged in connection with the
killing of Greencastle's Paul Houston in Portugal
last year is scheduled to begin today. Mr Houston,
51, was attacked while on the way back to his hotel
in the seaside village of Alvor in the Algarve, in
the early hours of September 6, 2009. The
father-of-four and grandfather had been on an annual
golfing holiday in the region with his wife Celine
and another couple, Philip and Marian Devlin.
A post mortem carried out at the Institute of Legal
Medicine in Portimao later confirmed he died from a
brain haemorrhage following an alleged beating. |

The men subsequently
arrested in connection with the incident are
Brazilian nationals, aged 19 and 26.
Mr Houston ran a second generation shoe shop in
Derry and was president of Greencastle Golf Club.
His death caused widespread shock in business and
golfing circles across the North West last year.
Members of his family, including his wife, flew to
the Algarve at the weekend to attend this week's
court proceedings in the city of Portimao. |
It is understood they
expect to be in Portugal for a number of weeks.
Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs said it
had been in touch with the family as the case
approached. "We are aware that this case is about to
come to court and we are in contact with the Houston
family," said a spokesperson. |
