GRAMMY-winning director Vic Sarin dearly wanted to
attend tonight's special screening of 'A Shine of
Rainbows' in Inishowen but was thwarted due to the
volcanic ash flight crisis.
Lorna McCausland, of Cinemagic, said the affable
director had "every intention" of being in Buncrana
to join 300 locals for the premiere but was forced
to return home.
"Vic was on his way to Ireland from Vancouver in
Canada for the preview in Buncrana but his flight
was cancelled," said Lorna.
"As far as I understand it, he had already taken a
flight within Canada as part of his journey to come
to Ireland but was forced to turn back."
Lorna said the 300 tickets earmarked for the
long-awaited local film preview sold out rapidly.
"The tickets went on sale on Monday, April 12 and
half of them sold out on the first day. The other
half sold quickly the next day and we then had to
tell people we would put them on the reserve list
for cancellations."
Inishowen got a glimpse
of movie magic when grammy-award winner Sarin, his
team and Hollywood stars Aidan Quinn and Connie
Nielsen arrived to film on location around the
peninsula in 2008.
Aideen Doherty of Donegal County Council's Film
Office which helped bring the film to the area, said
she looked
looked forward to the
showcasing of the peninsula through the movie.
"'A Shine of Rainbows' is about to open in North
America and cultural and tourism providers in the
peninsula have an opportunity to capitalise on
Inishowen being viewed by potential visitors to the
area," she said.
A number of Donegal
children who had parts in the film as well as extras
and members of the local production crew will be in
attendance tonight including young Lifford actress
Tara Scully and Sharon Simpkins who plays the
teacher in the film. The costume designer Susan
Scott is also expected to travel from Belfast for
tonight's showing. Buncrana Mayor Cllr Lee Tedstone
and Donegal Deputy Mayor Charlie McConalogue are
also on tonight's guest list along with local and
county councillors. Tonight's screening is at 8pm
following a short wine and nibbles reception at 7pm.
Aideen Doherty thanked Buncrana Town Council for
sponsoring the reception.
