Buncrana hosts service for crash victims 22.11.10

WORLD Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims yesterday held a special resonance in Inishowen where the single worst crash since records began happened earlier this year.
Road safety officers, gardai and members of the emergency services joined victims' families and locals for a ceremony in the Buncrana Youth Club, to mark the day.
Among those remembered were the eight Inishowen men who died in a two-vehicle crash at Glasmullen, Clonmany, on July 11.

They were Hughie Friel, 66, from Dunaff, Urris who was driving one of the cars. The seven young friends who died in the horrific smash were all in the other vehicle. They were Mark McLaughlin (21) of Ballinahone, Fahan; Paul Doherty (19), of Ardagh, Ballyliffin; Ciaran Sweeney (19), of Ballyliffin; PJ McLaughlin (21), of Rockstown, Burnfoot; James McEleney (23), of Minaduff, Clonmany; Eamon McDaid (22), of Ballymagan, Buncrana; and Damien McLaughlin (21), of Umricam, Buncrana. The driver of the car, from Ballymagan, Buncrana, was the sole survivor of the accident.
Among the speakers at yesterday's event were young men from the county who escaped death in crashes but who now live with horrific physical and emotional scars.
Nineteen people have died so far this year on Co Donegal roads out of a national total of 197. Last year, 240 people died on the country's roads - a record low.
Meanwhile, more than 22,800 people have lost their lives on the State's roads since records began.
