Farren family's story aired on RTE
11.01.10
THE plight of an
Inishowen family who are battling to find out why
their beloved daughter died in a car crash was aired
at the weekend on an RTE radio documentary.
'Mr Farren goes to Brussels' tells the story of Sean
and Magdalene Farren, whose daughter Sinead, died
tragically near Culdaff in 2001.
Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins who have helped the
Farrens bring their case to Europe said the
documentary highlighted the family's courage "in
their battle to find answers to many crucial
questions surrounding (Sinead's) untimely death". |
"I have had the
privilege of being closely involved with the Farren
petition. The Farren family approached me as their
local representative some years ago and when all
national avenues were exhausted I encouraged them to
take their case with the Petitions Committee of
which I am a member, where their public hearing took
place last November."
The Farren petition has now been referred to the EU
Parliament's Transport Committee, of which Mr
Higgins is also a member.
"I will use my position and influence to pursue the
issue of adequate road surfacing and push for
adequate inspections of local roads - |
|
it is my hope that the
standards demanded by the EU Directive on Road
Infrastructure Safety Management will be extended to
apply to all public roads," added Higgins.
He commended RTÉ for airing the documentary and
congratulated Tina Leonard, the producer on "a
valuable piece of journalism". |
