AFTER last week’s impressive 1-0 victory over high-flying Carrowmena, it was important for Carndonagh to win on Sunday to keep their momentum going. Gleneely were also coming into this game off the back of a victory having defeated Sea Rovers the previous week. With both sides quite evenly matched a tight encounter was expected to be on the cards. What occurred was a one sided rout for the home team who were solid at the back, tidy in possession in midfield and most importantly clinical in attack. Indeed if the home side can continue to play like this then Premier League football may not be too far away for Dermot Coyle’s charges.
Carndonagh began the game as aggressors when a Ronan Doherty free kick caused concern in the Gleneely back line in the opening minutes. Doherty was at it again soon afterwards when a great ball in landed to Shane Doherty who headed just over. Gleneely has chances too and Johnny Lafferty headed onto Ruairí Kelly who hit a beautiful curled shot just over with Declan O’Donnell rooted to his line.
Carndonagh broke the deadlock in the ninth minute. Another free kick from Ronan Doherty evaded the Gleneely defence and centre back Gerard McEleney was there to touch home. Emboldened by the goal Carndonagh started to exert their superiority on the game and the visitors were reduced to chasing shadows for much of the half. The returning Dermot Doherty had an effort just over and goalscorer Gerard McEleney had a few efforts that Daniel McCauley had to take care of.
Gleneely hit back with Barry Kearney testing Declan O’Donnell from distance and nice interplay between Stephen McLaughlin and John Doherty that ended when McLaughlin crossed instead of taking on a straightforward shot.
Carndonagh doubled their lead just after half hour mark when Andy Doherty embarked on a good run and found Eanna Newton with a slide rule pass. The young striker kept his head and coolly slotted into the bottom corner. Centre back Kevin Hirrell was lucky to escape with a booking after a two-footed lunge on Jason McElhinney that forced the Gleneely man to have to come off at half time.
Two goals became three for Carn just before half time when Kevin Kelly sent a nice ball across to Cathal Doherty who flicked on to Shane Doherty who lashed a thunderous shot into the top corner.
Having been so thoroughly outplayed in the first half Gleneely went for broke in the second by making three changes at half time. Carndonagh almost added a fourth in the opening minutes of the half when a Cathal Doherty shot forced a top rate save from McCauley. Gleneely returned fire with Christy Smith and Declan Kearney both forcing Declan O’Donnell into saves. Dermot Doherty hit just over for Carn on the half volley before Gleneely enjoyed their best spell of the game.
John Doherty hit just over after being teed up by Emmet McConway under pressure from O’Donnell. JJ McKinley forced O’Donnell into a save moments later under pressure from Hirrell and a rasping low shot from John Doherty was pushed just past the post by the Carndonagh custodian. Gleneely actually had the ball in the net but saw it ruled out as John Doherty who got the last touch was correctly adjudged to have been offside. O’Donnell earned his corn by pulling off another tremendous save this time from the boot of JJ McKinley. The visitors’ bad luck continued when a Declan Kearney free kick that needed only the slightest of touches to go in floated wide.
Gleneely were punished for their prolificacy when two late Carndonagh goals put a somewhat misleading look to the scoreline. Substitute Brendan Tabb capitalised on sloppy play in the Gleneely defence and lashed the ball into Tiernan Coyne who tapped into an empty net. Then at the death Liam Doherty skinned his marker and managed to toe poke past McCauley to make it five and send out a warning to the other First Division promotion chasers.
