Carndonagh...4 (Cathal Doherty 18, 47; Rory Ward 64; Fergal Doherty 77) Glengad...4 (Terrence Doherty 13, 63; Shane Doherty 38; John McLaughlin 40) Carndonagh won 7-6 penalties By Michael Stamp, Inishowen Independent, at St Patrick’s Park AS IT was our national holiday a small crowd turned out at St Patrick’s Park for this Buncrana Credit Union Cup tie between Carndonagh and Glengad yesterday. Those who made it were rewarded with a pulsating tie that both managers can take plenty of positives from. Glengad started the day as favourites but with this being a cup tie, not to mention a local derby, there was always a good chance things would not go according to script.
Carn gave an early warning of their intent when Tiernan Coyne tried to chip Michael McLaughlin after being released but hit over. Glengad came back with Terence Doherty playing a nice ball through to John McDermott leaving him one-on-one with Declan O’Donnell but the Glengad striker got his feet caught under the ball and the Carn keeper managed to gather. A goal was coming and it was the away side that claimed it. A throw in from the halfway line found Paul McGonagle who went on a lovely run down the left flank before whipping in a ball that Terence Doherty only had to tap in. the lead didn’t last long as five minutes later Carn scored through Cathal Doherty. The Carn striker launched a ball forward to Liam Doherty who held the ball up well at the post and drilled a ball back into Cathal Doherty who finished with aplomb. Glengad seemed irritated by conceding so soon after taking the lead and dominated the rest of the half. Paul McLaughlin shot just wide from a tight angle with a shot that O’Donnell had trouble judging the flight of. Stephen McLaughlin played a great ball forward for John McLaughlin but Fergal Doherty did well to get in and clear. Carndonagh attacked on the counter with Dermot Doherty embarking on a run and sending a ball through to Tiernan Coyne but Michael McLaughlin bravely dived at his feet to claim.
Whatever Coyle said at half time must have worked as Carndonagh were vastly improved in the second half but an early goal was imperative if they were to get back into the game. It came seven minutes after the break, Brendan Tabb and Andrew Doherty played a nice one-two in the Glengad area which was abruptly stopped when Doherty was clumsily taken down by Ruairí Doherty. The referee had no option but to award the penalty; Cathal Doherty stepped up and claimed his second of the day sending Michael McLaughlin the wrong way.

At this point Glengad realised Carndonagh weren’t going to roll over and die but they must have thought they had put the game to bed on 63 minutes when Terence Doherty claimed his second of the afternoon. Declan O’Donnell looked to be favourite to a long ball out of Glengad’s defence but Doherty managed to just get there first managing to knock it past O’Donnell before poking in. Less than 90 seconds later Carn reduced the deficit when a Liam Doherty corner was headed in by Rory Ward.
