THE Illies U-16 girls soccer team are two games away
from national glory after defeating Salthill Devon
in the biggest win of their young lives.
The local stars trumped the Galway team, which was
one of the favourites to go all the away, in the FAI
U-16 Cup in front of a huge crowd at the Illies last
Sunday.
Rosemary Gallagher was first on the mark before
Sarah Parker added two late goals as Illies came
from behind for a famous 3-2 win.
The girls now face a quarter-final tie on Sunday
July 11 next. The draw for the last eight has not
yet been made |

Manager John Doherty
said his team will fear no one at this stage, having
already dispatched one of the favourites.
“To be totally honest I didn’t expect us to win. We
saw Salthill in action last Easter in Wexford and
they are a very strong side, which boasts two Irish
internationals. On the day we battled hard and the
girls dug deep to come back from 2-1 down with only
seven minutes to go,” he said.
“They are a great group of girls and they deserve
the victory. Most of them have been together since
the age of 12 and they reached the quarter-finals of
the U-14 Cup two years ago. Hopefully we can go
farther this time around.”
The Illies girls, who were missing two key players
last Sunday, are expected to be at full strength for
next month’s big game. Who would bet against them
going all the way? |
