Harps lift Lafferty Memorial
Shield
26.07.10
Finn Harps 2 – 0
Clifton Villa (Derry)
by Sam Hegarty
FINN Harps FC lifted their first piece of silverware
of the year when they defeated Derry side Clifton
Villa by two goals to nil in the final of the Philip
Lafferty Memorial Shield held in Redcastle United's
fine facilities.
This was the first annual charity competition held
in memory of the late Philip Lafferty who had sadly
passed away at a young age following a battle with
cancer. Philip was a hard working member of the
Redcastle United committee and had served as club
secretary for numerous years.
Redcastle United’s committee made the decision to
set up a four-team invitational tournament to raise
money for the hospice as well as honour their late
club man.
The four teams involved were: Inishowen League
champions Redcastle United, Finn Harps FC, Ulster
Senior League champions Letterkenny Rovers and Derry
champions Clifton Villa.
The semi finals threw up the meetings of Finn Harps
and Letterkenny with Harps coming out on top 3-1 and
Redcastle United v Clifton Villa with Villa coming
away with a 4-0 win. |

Harps:
Christopher McGlynn, Ryan McCleary, Conor McNulty,
Cormac Friel (Michael Lafferty), Brian Coll, Barney
McMenimen, Ryan Gildea, James Connolly, Conor
Carlin, Blain Curtis, Luke O’Farrell (Declan Curtis)
(Philip Hegarty for Declan Curtis). |
The final started off
at a sluggish pace with the Derry side well on top.
The young Harps side were no match for the superior
strength of Villa. |
The second half saw a
vast improvement for Harps and with only 15 minutes
left on the clock a sublime free kick from Blain
Curtis found its way into the top corner giving the
keeper no chance.
Harps were much more settled by this stage and it
wasn’t long before they added their second when a
through ball from James Connolly was met by Philip
Hegarty and he made no mistake in slotting home into
the bottom corner. |

€1100 was raised for
the hospice from gate receipts alone on the day.
