Glengad clinch Cassidy Cup 19.08.10

McClean’s side win second pre-season cup in four days

Glengad United...1

Clonmany Shamrocks...0

IN THE last of the peninsula’s pre-season competitions prior to the start of the Inishowen League proper this Friday night, it was Liam McClean’s men who extracted some measure of revenge for defeat to the same opposition in last year’s final.
Glengad looked lively from the outset and had the edge throughout the opening half. Their two wingers Stephen Mc Laughlin on the right and John Gerard Mc Dermott on the opposite side proved thorns in the Clonmany side, getting in behind the Shamrocks’ defence and delivering into the danger area. Unfortunately for Glengad, their fellow attackers were not able to capitalise on the good work and turn the deliveries into scores.
The eventual winners could have been ahead as early as the first minute when Mc Dermott found himself unmarked at the edge of the penalty area. He seemed certain to score but Peter Devlin advanced to make a splendid block. Then Mc Laughlin got to the by-line and squared to Terence Doherty but he was unable of apply the finishing touch and shortly afterwards another Mc Dermott effort was tipped away by Devlin. Clonmany’s first attempt on goal came from Mark Mc Laughlin but his ground shot from 25 yards was well wide and in another attack Houghton in the Glengad nets was at full stretch to push away a cross from the right.
Mid way through the half there were penalty appeals at both ends. Hand ball was claimed when Mc Dermott drove the ball into the Clonmany area while at the other end Michael Devlin having latched onto a pass from Michael Grant was sent tumbling but referee O’Kane adjudged the infringement just outside the area. Mc Laughlin was again getting reward on the right and his cross shot was just wide of the far post.
Then he teed up John Mc Laughlin but his attempt was a tame one. Glengad kept pushing and from the other wing Mc Dermott continued to cause havoc when he beat two defenders close to the by-line and squared to Paul Mc Dermott right in front of goal. However, he failed to react quickly and Clonmany defence closed him down before he could get a shot on goal.
Despite all the Glengad pressure the Shamrocks could have moved ahead but winger Mc Dermott, back helping out at a corner, was ideally placed to kick a Michael Grant ground shot off the Glengad line. And in an excellent move right on half time, Paul Mc Laughlin delivered from out on the left wing to Michael Devlin. He headed back across goal to the inrushing Steve Harkin who headed powerfully goalwards but Houghton was equal to it.
The deadlock was broken on 52 minutes with a goal of some quality. The ball was moved quickly out of defence via a one-two between John Mc Laughlin and Stephen Mc Laughlin and when the latter laid it off to Paul Mc Dermott he struck it sweetly from outside the area and it flew past Devlin. It was a goal worthy of winning any game.
The introduction of Clonmany substitute Darragh Doherty gave the Shamrocks a new impetus. One of his left wing crosses was struck into the side netting by Mark Mc Laughlin and after good work by Paddy Doherty he himself turned and had a snap shot but it was straight at Houghton. However, Glengad continued to press and Terence Doherty was hauled down on two separate as he burst into the area but the resulting free kicks came to nothing while a Jason Doherty cross was headed just wide by John Mc Laughlin. Clonmany piled on the pressure at the death and when Paul Mc Laughlin controlled a poor clearance he seemed certain to level matters but his effort was blocked. Another Clonmany substitute Jason Devlin had a ground shot touched wide for a corner but Glengad held out to claim their second pre-season cup in the space of four days.
At the end of the game the Cassidy Cup was presented to Glengad captain Shane Doherty by Shaun Cassidy. Host club, Rasheney FC, would like to express their thanks to all the other participants in the competition and to referees Gerard O’ Kane and Liam Porter who officiated at the games.
