Burt to meet Newtown 17.09.10
Junior A Championship, first round second leg

Burt...0-12

Naomh Ultan...2-3

BURT set up a semi-final meeting with neighbours Naomh Colmcille after Sunday’s three point win over Naomh Ultan in the second leg of their first round championship tie.
Burt had notched up a late goal in the first leg two weeks earlier to secure a four point win in the first leg in Dunkineely, but were almost caught with two late goals from the visitors on Sunday. Trailing by 0-11 to 0-2 ten minutes from full time, Naomh Ultan hit two goals and a point in a four minute spell to reduce the deficit to just two points with five minutes remaining.
But with Naomh Ultan pressing forward, they got caught on the counter attack when Martin Donaghy burst through the middle to set up Dara Grant who settled Burt nerves and pointed to put three points between the teams on the stroke of full time.
Playing with the wind, Burt dominated the first half. Kevin McDermott and Ciaran Dowds dominated midfield, while Joe Boyle, Brian Sheerin and Dara Grant showed well in the full forward line.
Paddy McDermott opened the scoring with an early free before Cian Kennedy got on the end of a Paul Byrne pass to draw Naomh Ultan level in the fourth minute.
Joe Boyle grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck after that, hitting four unanswered points by the 21st minute.
Paul McHugh and Dara Grant added points from acute angles on the right wing before Kennedy responded with a free for the visitors.
Brian Sheerin scored the point of the match three minutes before the break when he slid Tony Boyle-style out near the sideline to win the ball and cut inside Aaron Kyles to score with a long range effort.
Paul McHugh converted a late 45 to give Burt a 0-9 to 0-2 half time lead.
Points from Joe Boyle and Ciaran Dowds extended Burt’s lead to nine points mid way through the second half, but Naomh Ultan started to come into it around the middle of the field with Shay McWhinnie and Declan Murrin winning a good share of possession raining high ball into their full forward line where Aidan Duddy was very dangerous. Kennedy converted a 52nd minute free, before Duddy got his side’s first goal moments later. Declan Murrin hit a booming kick into the square that the big full forward rose to catch and smashed to the net on the turn.
The Dunkineely side grabbed that lifeline with both hands and were right back in it when the Burt defence got caught in possession and Turlough McGinley struck a 25 yard effort into the bottom left corner of the net to make it 2-3 to 0-11.
Having been cruising, Burt were now in danger of throwing it away. But with Naomh Ultan committed to attack, Burt hit them on the break with sub Martin Donaghy surging through the middle and setting up Dara Grant for a late point that put three between the teams and ensured that mouth watering semi-final with Newtown. Naomh Pádraig Iskaheen will play Lifford in the other semi-final. Both games are to be played on Saturday 25 September.
