Glengad storm to victory at Illies

Illies Celtic...1 Glengad United...3 GLENGAD continued their storming start to the season with an impressive victory on their travels at the Illies on a damp Sunday afternoon last weekend. After an opening period of stalemate the game ignited in a second-half, which produced four goals as the Premier Division visitors secured safe passage into the next round of the cup. Illies Celtic, relegated in a play-off against Aileach last season, have made a disappointing start to life in Divison One and that poor form continued against Glengad on Sunday. |

In contrast, United are the
best team in Inishowen for the month of September and
Liam McClean’s side sit proudly on top of the Premier
Division with two wins from two. Sunday’s game produced nothing by way of goalmouth action in the opening period as both defences cancelled each other out and the half developed into a dour midfield battle. The game opened up and Glengad increased the intensity of their play in the second period and duly opened the scoring on 58 minutes when Terence Doherty ran straight through the home defence before rounding Noel McDermott and slotting the ball home for a fantastic goal. United doubled their advantage after 74 minutes when Patrick McDermott converted a penalty after Doherty had been upended. Illies replied with Seamus Donaghey having an effort well saved by Seamus Houghton in the visitors goal. The home team grabbed a goal back with five minutes remaining after Liam O’Connor pounced on a loose ball to fire a superb shot to the roof of the net. |

The visitors sealed the tie
almost immediately though when Paul McDermott and
Doherty played a neat one two on the edge of the area
for McDermott to slot low to the corner from twelve
