NAOMH Colmcille and Burt
will meet again on Saturday night in Letterkenny in
their Junior Championship semi-final replay with the
winners playing Naomh Pádraig Muff in an all-Inishowen
county final later this month.
A point scored deep in injury time by Naomh Colmcille’s
Barry O’Hagan salvaged a draw in a game the Newtown side
had dominated only for Burt to finish strongly. Naomh
Colmcille led by 2-2 to 0-3 early in the second half,
but momentum swung Burt’s way after Paddy McDermott
goaled from a penalty rebound ten minutes into the
second period. The sides went into injury time tied at
1-6 to 2-3 before Ciaran Dowds handed Burt the lead
three minutes in only for O’Hagan to secure a replay
with that controversial last gasp free.
Naomh Colmcille manager Stephen Friel will be sweating
on the fitness of defenders Gerard Curran and his
brother Cathal, who picked up injuries early in the
drawn game. Burt will be without midfielder Kevin
McDermott who was hospitalised after sustaining a back
injury in a clash with his teammate.
Saturday night’s game is in O’Donnell Park with a 5pm
throw-in, and extra time will be played if the sides
finish level again.
Naomh Pádraig Muff saw off the challenge from Lifford in
their semi-final (see match report on page 61) with
second half goals from Barry Hegarty and Oisin McColgan
giving them a 2-8 to 0-6 win. The Donegal fixtures
committee confirmed that the Junior A final will take
place on Sunday 17 October.
Muff return to league action this weekend when they
travel Killygordon to play fellow promotion contenders
Red Hugh’s on Saturday evening (throw-in 5.30pm). Muff
and Red Hugh’s are tied on 21 points apiece, although
Muff have a game in hand. Victory for Aiden McAleer’s
team would see them leapfrog Robert Emmet’s and Naomh
Colmcille and move into second place in Division 4.
Coláistí Inis Eoghain host Omagh on Thursday
Meanwhile, Sean Clerkin’s Inishowen combined schools
team will try to make it three wins from three in the BT
Rannafast Cup when the host Tyrone kingpins Omagh CBS at
the Scarvey in Buncrana on Thursday (throw-in
5.45pm).
Inishowen defeated St Eunan’s College on Tuesday and victory tonight will see
them qualify for the quarter-finals with a game to
spare.
