Carn retain Division 3 status

Carn...2-13 Na Rossa...1-4 by Damian Dowds, Inishowen Independent, at Páirc Uí Dochartaigh, Carndonagh CARNDONAGH retained their Division 3 status with a comfortable 12 point win over Na Rossa at Foden on Saturday night. Kieran Canny’s team have been firing on all cylinders in recent weeks, although there’s a certain irony in the fact that it’s only now as the season is ending that Carndonagh have an injury free squad to choose from. With Na Rossa a point ahead of them in the league table, Carn needed a win to get out of relegation trouble and they set about their task with admirable efficiency. Liam Shiels pointed early on before Fergal Matthews got the game’s first goal. Liam Ward flicked a diagonal Eanna Newton ball into Matthews’ path and he his picked his spot, rifling the ball past Declan Bonner into the bottom left corner. |

With Mark Clerkin dropping
back to help out his defence, Na Rossa were doing their
best to stay in touch and John Paul McCready pointed
from the left wing on ten minutes for their first score
of the match. But four unanswered points from Carn, two
from Garvan McGrenra and one each from Shiels and Gerard
Doherty, had Carn 1-5 to 0-1 ahead before Na Rossa got
their second point of the day, through Trevor Melly in
the 20th minute. Na Rossa should have been closer as they had created some good chances but dropped four balls short into Declan O’Donnell’s hands allowing the Carn keeper to launch counter-attacks. |

Doherty and Gerard Doherty added points before half time
as Carn led by 1-8 to 0-2 at the break. Carn sealed the win within five minutes of the restart. Eanna Newton had scored a point before he cracked in a goal on 35 minutes to make it 2-9 to 0-2. That goal was Newton’s last contribution as he was replaced by Kevin Doherty. Indeed, the strength in depth of Kieran Canny’s side was impressive. He introduced five subs, each of whom was as good as the man he replaced. It was one of those subs, Dermot Simpson, who got Carn’s next point after taking a pass from Richie Cunningham. Na Rossa introduced Martin Bonner and he made a good contribution in the last quarter as the visitors enjoyed their best spell of the match. Ryan McCready pointed after a quick Martin Caulfield free. Shiels responded with a fine point for Carn, and Martin Bonner pointed for Na Rossa on 50 minutes. Gerard Doherty converted two close range frees, before Na Rossa gained a small measure of respectability when John Paul McCready scored a goal from long range with the last kick of the game. The win ends an injury blighted season for Carn and ensures they will remain in Division 3 in 2011. If Carn can keep their key men fit, and continue to blood teenagers into the senior ranks, they will be a force in Intermediate football in the years to come. Na Rossa’s ambitions are more immediate: they must beat Milford in a play-off to avoid relegation. The sides have met twice this season, with Na Rossa winning one and drawing the other. A place in Division 3 in 2011 will be the winner’s lot when the sides meet next Sunday in Dunfanaghy.
