Cockhill Celtic...5 (Laird 26, 44; John Doherty 55 (o.g.); M. Gallagher 83; S. Porter 90) Rashenny...1 (A. Doherty 15) Report: Inishowen Independent COCKHILL Celtic came from behind before winning this Ulster Junior Cup second round game comfortably. Having fallen behind to an Anthony Doherty strike on 15 minutes, it took Cockhill some time to find their rhythm, but a David Laird double had them 2-1 ahead at half time. Laird and Aidan Porter switched from the right to left flank throughout, pulling the Rashenny defence hither and thither. Laird forced John Doherty into conceding an own goal ten minutes into the second half and a late finishing flourish, with goals from Michael Gallagher and Sean Porter put a glossy sheen on Cockhill’s performance. The visitors opened the scoring on the quarter hour when John Doherty’s free kick was deflected in the box and fell to Anthony Doherty who made no mistake, shooting across Leo McColgan and into the net. |

Cockhill had beaten
Rashenny 3-0 in a recent league encounter, but with
their tails up the visitors went close on 25 minutes
when Brian Doherty shot narrowly wide from the edge of
the box. That miss, however, was punished moments later when teenager David Laird, who had switched from the left wing to the right, was put through by Seamus Gill and the former finished high to the net. Gill had the ball in the net on 35 minutes but his effort was ruled out for offside. The momentum had swung Cockhill’s way, and they went close when right back Michael Gallagher got on the end of a 50 yard diagonal ball from Aidan Porter but dragged his shot just wide. Cockhill took the lead just before the break when Porter cut the ball back to Seamus Gill. Gill’s shot was blocked, but Laird was on hand to stab the loose ball into the net. Rashenny keeper Christy Ivers saved from both Declan Kearney and Michael Gallagher early in the second half, but Cockhill went 3-1 up on 55 minutes through a John Doherty own goal. |
That man Laird whipped in a
dangerous, low cross from the left and with Seamus Gill
breathing down his neck, Doherty was unlucky to see his
attempted clearance spin off his boot and into the net. John Doherty almost made amends at other end on 73 minutes when he rose to head a Damien Friel corner goalwards, but Laird was on the line and cleared the danger. With ten minutes remaining, centre half Martin Donaghy crashed a powerful header off the crossbar before Michael Gallagher found the net after substitute Christy Bell laid back yet another Laird cross to the right back. Sean Porter showed his centre half partner Donaghy how to do it right on the stroke of half time when he rose highest to head a Declan Kearney corner to the net to wrap up a 5-1 win. Cockhill Celtic: Leo McColgan; Michael Gallagher, Martin Donaghey, Sean Porter, Shane McDaid; Aidan Porter, Eamon Fullerton, Declan Kearney, David Laird; Seamus Gill, Liam McCarron.
