A SECOND-half goal by winger Sean Downey was enough to secure all three points for Greencastle Reserves in Carrowmena last Sunday morning.
With much of the peninsula enveloped in fog on a freezing morning, the sun eventually shone on the visitors following a tough local derby at Tremone.
Much the better team in the first-half, Carrowmena faded badly in the second period and could have lost by a wider margin had it not been for a number of superb saves by Maurice McGeady.
Greencastle, buoyed by excellent displays from Liam Kelly and Benny McDermott, weathered a home storm before going through the gears and cruising to a deserved win.
Carrowmena started the brighter of the two teams with Drew Crumlish’s dipping shot after five minutes requiring a fine save from Patsy Barr in the Greencastle goal.
Another Crumlish effort flashed wide before Mark McGonigle and Gerard Gill combined well to force a Carrowmena corner.
A Michael O’Doherty long ball was superbly flicked into the path of Paddy McClenaghan by Gerard Gill, resulting in another corner as the home side continued to dominate.
Eunan McDaid embarked on a rare Greencastle attack to relieve the pressure before a
Gerard Gill snap shot almost had Carrowmena in front midway through the period.
The visitors’ best chance of the first-half fell to Matthew Harrison, who seized a Maurice McGeady clearance before tamely shooting wide after an excellent through ball by Kevin McLaughlin.
A constant threat in the first-half, Gerard Gill almost fired the Tremone men ahead but his stunning left-footed volley flew six inches too high.
Collecting a Gill flick minutes before the break, Mark McGonigle was off-target from 25 yards before Drew Crumlish hit the side net when well placed.
After a stern half-time talk Greencastle emerged a different team and were in front within one minute of the restart when Sean Downey kept his composure to clip past McGeady after Eunan McDaid’s perfect pass.
Growing in confidence, Downey then set up a chance for Eunan McDaid but the front man’s effort was brilliantly saved by Maurice McGeady after Kevin McLaughlin’s astute through ball.
Latching onto a Mike Price long pass moments later, McDaid was once again denied by McGeady, who raced from his goal to save bravely at the feet of the Greencastle player.
Relying on second-half scraps, Gerard Gill continued to look the most likely for Carrowmena, firing too high from 25 yards after the hour mark.
Greencastle looked increasingly comfortable though with the experience of Shaun Cavanagh and Mike Price proving a real asset to the Ballybrack men.
A rush of blood to the head from Greencastle keeper Patsy Barr, who raced forty yards from his line without winning the ball, almost presented Carrowmena with an equaliser but Kevin McCauley fired wide of an empty net from distance.
Greencastle substitute Charlie Gill had a couple of half-chances blocked before McGeady saved well from Conor Lafferty while Kevin McLaughlin decided not to shoot when well placed.
Carrowmena’s last chance fell to Gerard Gill once more but the impressive striker couldn’t get any power on his effort as he shot on the turn.
